Checking Your Water Pump for Leaks

*EASY*

You should occasionally check your water pump for coolant leaks as follows:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual). Raise the hood.
  2. Identify the location of your water pump. It is in front of the engine but behind the cooling fan.

The pump will have a large rubber hose connecting it to the bottom of the radiator.
  3. If leaks occur, they will most likely come from the vent hole in the bottom of the pump. Look at the vent hole. If coolant is dripping from the vent hole, the inner seal is worn. It may be necessary to crawl underneath the car or use a mirror to view the hole. Also check the gasket between the pump and engine block for leaks.
  4. If leaks are discovered, have the pump replaced by a professional automotive technician. Close the hood.
